"Thiagi's 100 Favorite Games" provides exercises or icebreakers that can be used in a variety of training topics from communication skills to even workplace violence. There is no expensive or cumbersome equipment involved. Most exercises require little more than flip chart or ordinary paper. So how important are these "games" for use in training?

Most studies show that the first few minutes of a speech, presentation or training are critical in capturing and maintaining an audience's attention, otherwise known as breaking the ice. Failing to do so mean the audience's attention spans might not rally for another 30 minutes. By then, the purpose or relevance is lost on most people whose minds are now engaged in what to do with a winning Lotto ticket. Interactive training is critical for learning--'to be a guide on the side rather than a sage onstage."

Some have resorted to games and gimmicks to capture attention which for the most part works. However, many perceptive participants have also been aware of this "ploy" and arrive late knowing they have missed nothing more than a game. That makes it critical that the trainer is able to capture attention and make it meaningful and relevant to the training and not personally embarrassing. (I read where one trainer who asked everyone to stand on their chairs. The woman who wrote the article was the only one who did it)!

The author, "Thiagi," as he is called, because no one can remember or spell his given name Sivasailam Thiagarajan has been around training for decades. He has written 40 books on training, articles for training publications, and is frequently quoted. His amiable, Ghandi-like, appearance belies a wry, rapier wit that appeals to the toughest audience of all--other trainers. I have been one of those audience members when he demonstrated with a $10 bill how far people will go once invested in a bad decision. My favorite was how to create leadership training in one day with no preparation at all.

Its human nature to get stale through routine, to use what once worked long after it lost its originality. This book should breathe new life in your delivery.

When I purchased this book I was hoping for a few good ideas to add to me repetoire but what I ended up with was a BRILLIANT collection of original games that are pure gold!

I don't think I could apply all of them in my style of classroom training but the fact that each game is really well explained you can see the thought processes used in their creation and I've actually become more adept at constructing my own activities as a result.

I love this book and I believe Mr. Thiagarajan is a true master!

Some excellent ideas in here. Lots of ideas I couldn't use as a consultant as many were not sorority for a culture or a little too complicated and long. All work buying however.

I am a human services / employee trainer and I use this book on a regular basis. Many of the training ideas can be modified for the target audience to make an even greater impact. There are also good training tips throughout the book. I love it and my clients and students do too!

I had looked at this book at SHRM conferences and passed it by. Recently I needed an activity to add to a workshop and a fellow consultant recommended Thiagi's Games book. I love it and I'm not someone who is easily impressed. I like the fact that every game has a learning point including the icebreakers. There is a great variety of games to select from. Some games, like Twisted Pair Puzzles, can be created for any topic. I will incorporate a game into most of my workshops. The only suggestion I would have for the author is to create a list of learning points for each game. The index lists the name of the game and you can't tell what it is about from the name. I wrote a keyword after each game name in my table of contents. I also bought BARNGA and am using it next week with a leadership team.

This is a useful reference book for facilitators of group dynamics. I really find it useful in the most different situations, for diverse clients.
