Grete Stern (9 May 1904 – 24 December 1999) was a German-Argentine photographer. Like her husband Horacio Coppola, she helped modernize the visual arts in Argentina, and presented the first exhibition of modern photographic art in Buenos Aires, in 1935. The daughter of Frida Hochberger and Louis Stern, Grete Stern was born on 9 May 1904 in Elberfeld, Germany. She often visited family in England and attended primary school there

In April 1930 Grete Stern followed Peterhans to Dessau to continue her studies. There she met an Argentine photographer and fellow Peterhans student, Horacio Coppola. Auerbach kept the studio running and Stern returned to continue their work together in March 1931. On one hand, with the importance she gives to form. Her photography is not improvised but well thought out.

The photographers Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola met at the Bauhaus in 1932. The next year, they emigrated to London, where they married, and then to Coppola’s native Argentina, where they mounted the country’s first exhibition of modernist photography. Her portraits from Germany in the early thirties-the actress Helene Weigel, stern and downcast, and her husband, Bertolt Brecht, impish, with a Joan of Arc haircut-prefigure those she took of Borges and the painter Demetrio Urruchúa. In Buenos Aires, she also got into Argentina’s true national pastime: not soccer but psychotherapy.

This article looks at Grete Stern's work in Argentina after her first trip to and show in Buenos Aires in 1935 through her last works with photography in the 1980's, revealing the scope of her photographic production and intervention in the Argentine art scene. It highlights both her work within portraiture as well as her understudied and largely unknown landscape photography.
