Selected comic treasures from American newspaper pages from 1896 to the 1970s display a range of graphic experimentation and imaginative storytelling.

This book is a massive sampling of newspaper comics from The Yellow Kid to modern days (well, about 1977 anyway). The large pages allow for great classics like Little Nemo in Slumberland to be printed almost as big as they were originally. Comics like Nemo were so rich in fine details that are hard to appreciate or discern when printed in 8 1/2" x 11" format. I used to pore over this book quite a bit as a kid.

Growing up in the 60s & 70s, I wasn't much enamored of comic strips appearing in the newspaper with a scant few exceptions.

This large size book has a lot of full Sunday pages of some of the great Sunday comics starting at the turn of the century. I got the book because I am a huge fan of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" and wanted to see what Windsor McKay's colleagues were doing. Comic book artist often had a full page to do their work) - the early Krazy Kat, Gasoline Alley, Captain Easy and Buck Rogers color Sunday pages are stunning. Well worth getting!

This is a beautifully packaged collection of some of the very best comic-strip art from the first half of the 20th century (and a little more). The reproduction is very good, the introductory material is useful and informative and the selection of strips is first rate.

In particular, having collected several of these strips in other formats over the years (e.g. "Little Nemo", "Polly and Her Pals" and "Krazy Kat"), I can say that they've selected many of my personal favorites for inclusion here.

As I write this, this book is basically in "remainder" status meaning that it is available brand new for very cheap, but has gone out of print in hardcover - pick it up while you can!

Good condition for being used. Much of the print is very small.

Loved reading this when I was a kid. Weirdly reading some of the strips led me to a greater understanding of the culture at the time.
