Harry Taussig wrote a series of fingerpicking tutors during the 60s/70s and recorded an album of his playing. This is the second book (after 'Teach Yourself Guitar', devoted mainly to Carter-style playing) and develops alternating bass fingerpicking blues and folk. The songs are from both genres and feature hammers, pulloffs, slides and so on. These are rootsy, Americana-style pieces from one of the early practitioners of the 60s revival. Harry Taussig went on to become a professor of photography. The third book is called 'Advanced Guitar'.

A follow-up volume to 'Teach Yourself Guitar'. Concentrates on the instrumental solo, with special emphasis on basic fingerpicking techniques. To read this book, upload an EPUB or FB2 file to Bookmate.

This covers playing up the neck in songs and instrumentals such as Grandfather's Clock, Pretty Polly, When First Unto This Country, 900 Miles and so on. There is a section on open tunings and some more complex showpieces.

These books have neat, folksy illustrations and together form a lovely collection of American acoustic guitar pieces and songs. A faster-paced book by Taussig , sort of a summary of the other three, is called Instrumental Techniques of American Guitar. All are recommended if you are into roots Americana.

Incidentally, the cover of the Oak publication of 'Advanced Guitar' is by photographer Herb Wise. I would vote it one of the most beautiful and evocative images ever of acoustic guitar playing.

Ok, i'll bite. Great book for finger-picking folk standards. It gives you more than one version and is easy to understand and use. I had it as a novice and have gone on to use it for students. It's excellent. You'll find FREIGHT TRAIN by Elizabeth Cotton in it. i wasn't too happy when i thought i lost my copy. I thought it was written by Happy Traum though. Was so happy when I found my book and it IS all that i remembered.
