Martin C. Strong gives us an excellent discography covering most of the artists important to us. Equally as important, though, is the fact that he rates most of the albums covered. His 1-10 point system is straightforward, and frequently quite accurate. He is judicious in his assignment of 10 points; there are only a handful of them among thousands of albums rated. His perspective is also very British, with certain prejudices following. While compilations by Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Little Richard, etc., receive at best 9 point ratings, Oasis seems to have produced two 10 point albums. (It might make sense if he felt 'best of' collections did not warrant perfect scores, but such collections are nearly the only means of collecting those early artists mentioned above, and anyway, he gave 10 points to both The Byrd's and Simon and Garfunkel's 'Greatest Hits' - so there.) In fact, among the few 'perfect' (10 point) albums found herein are 'Close to the Edge' by Yes, and - of all things - 'Bat Out of Hell' by Meat Loaf. If the latter deserves 10 points, then Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run' deserves 1,000 points (it only got 9). He takes a realistic view of Eminem (no 10 point albums) while feeding into the overestimation of Nirvana (two 10 point albums). As for Dylan, some adjustment is called for, like swapping the 10 points bestowed upon 'Desire' with the mere 6 point given to 'John Wesley Harding'. Anyway, this could go on, but the point is, buy it for the excellent discographic information (including UK and US chart positions) and background essays, not so much the reviews. That said, at least this book DOES include Metallica, George Harrison and Joan Armatrading, unlike another new review guide we could mention....

This is everything I expected it to be and have since passed it on to a friend who agrees that it has so much information and it is so easy to browse through. This was a great purchase and the shipping and service was incredibly fast.

Not impressed. Print is teeny and the first group I looked up (Zephyr) wasn't even in it.

Interesting chronology

Much as I liked the Harry Horse illustrations in the early editions of this book, I didn't complain when they disappeared. After all, each took up a full page and while they were often great, they took up space that could have been used for more bands. I enjoyed everything about those early editions, the layout, the size, the bands, even though some favorites seemed to have been left out. (The "R's" were particularly decimated, with favorites the Raspberries, Red Rider, and Renaissance given not so much as a nod. Oh, well.) The 7th edition is smaller, the typeface has changed, and photos of artists grace the beginning of each letter, and none of the changes are for the better. (Particularly disturbing is the picture of Eminem at the start of the "E's", with Oasis at the start of the "O's" not far behind. Was that really necessary?) I still question his mix of bands, but since this is based on UK and US charts, I can live with most of his picks. Some of the omissions are pretty glaring, but that's my opinion. Overall, I'm still a big fan.

Strong must have spent very, very long hours to assemble with care such a gigantic compilation on info ! However, there are several important omissions (Elastica, Guess Who just to name a couple of acts that really left a mark); further, several acts that I've never heard about (particularly duos) are included.
Owned a copy of The Great Rock Discography (1998 edition) for fourteen years and it never failed to resolve our music disputes.
This new addition to our library brings us up to date with newer artists and bands. The same meticulous cataloguing of information means your 'knowledge' cannot be challenged.
