William Merritt Chase (November 1, 1849 – October 25, 1916) was an American painter, known as an exponent of Impressionism and as a teacher. He is also responsible for establishing the Chase School, which later would become Parsons School of Design. William Merritt Chase was born on November 1, 1849, in Williamsburg (now Nineveh), Indiana, to the family of Sarah Swain and David H. Chase, a local businessman

William Merritt Chase (November 1, 1849 – October 25, 1916) was an American painter, known as an exponent of Impressionism and as a teacher. He is also responsible for establishing the Chase School, which later would become Parsons The New School for Design. Chase, a local businessman. During a sojourn in Paris, Wiles then studied at the Académie Julian and also with the portrait painter Carolus-Duran (who was John Singer Sargent's teacher). Lauded for his dazzling brushwork and ability to capture the likeness of the subject, Wiles became the artist of choice for a socially prominent clientele, as well as important businessmen and political figures. Among his sitters were William Jennings Bryan and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1915 Wiles was awarded a gold medal at the Panama Pacific Exposition.

Irving Ramsey Wiles (1861-1948) Interior of William Merritt Chase’s Tenth Street Studio. A celebrated teacher, Chase likely first met his protégée Annie Lang in 1901 when she enrolled in one of his annual summer schools on Long Island.

William Merritt Chase was an American painter of the late 19th century. He produced his still lifes, landscapes and portraits in Impressionism and Realism. The painter was also known as an eminent teacher. William Merritt Chase started his professional career in 1870 when he worked as a portraitist in Saint Louis, Missouri to support his family and earn his living. He presented his first artworks at the local exhibition in 1871. The show provided the young artist with first popularity which allowed him to travel to Munich. While in Europe, Chase sent regularly his paintings to New York City where they were represented at the National Academy of Design.
