A collection of photographs taken at the villa Le Rêve during Henri Mattise's residency there between 1943 . I just spent a week at Villa Le Reve.

A collection of photographs taken at the villa Le Rêve during Henri Mattise's residency there between 1943 and 1948 is a record of his artistic preparation process for such works as Yellow and Blue Interior and the portraits of Haitian model Lydia Delectorskaya.

Henri Matisse lived at the villa Le Reve in Vence from 1943 to 1948. Here he created a sensuous world, bringing to Vence all the objects without which he could not draw and paint - jugs, vases, tables and chairs, shells, fabrics. A young Russian-born photographer, Helerie Adant, often came to visit her cousin Lydia Delectorskaya, who was Matisse's model and assistant from 1935 onwards.

Marie-France Boyer's text evokes the particular atmosphere of Le Reve, where Matisse produced Yellow and Blue .

Marie-France Boyer's text evokes the particular atmosphere of Le Reve, where Matisse produced Yellow and Blue Interior of 1946, Large Red Interior of 1948, and many other important works. This beautifully designed book reproduces over fifty of Helene Adant's "backstage" photographs, as well as several of Matisse's famous Vence interiors in color and a number of drawings. At the heart of the book lie Matisse's props as they are arranged and rearranged, eventually to be fixed in some of the greatest paintings of the twentieth century.

Her books, including Cabin Fever, The French Café, and The Cult of the Virgin, all reveal her distinctive sensitivity for people, places, and objects.

My art education started in Paris at the age of 22 my love of Delicroix, took me there. The next leg was to Aix-en Provence to study Cezanne. Finally to the Cote

for Matisse. Living in Vence the morning coffee in the square, afternoons in the studio, and late discussions about art and politics in the evening light. I was friends

with a American artist called Etien, who lived across the street from "le reve". It was always an inspiration walking past and drinking in the night air. Now painting in Boston, MA the magic of that time comes though in this well written and photographed glimpse of Matisse and his work at "le reve"
