The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media (SLMM) is a group of artists, centred in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States, and formed in 1982. It describes itself as a network for artists and other persons interested in a holistic perspective. Alexander Nepote, SLMM’s late mentor, expressed an idea that is relevant to Layering: "Energy that connects everything is a cosmic web- this includes information from the collective unconscious, the metaphysical as well as the physical.

The 21st century has brought with it a marked shift in our perception of art and communication: we are more multifaceted in our approaches, more diverse in our observations. This interdisciplinary field of study is known as Visual Culture. Scholars of visual culture find themselves in a near-constant state of analysis: politics, power, technology, science, ideology, religion, feminism, gender. Dada art was born from societies need to vent its frustration at the world, propounded by the horrific and unnecessary evils of the Great War. Millennial artists today are fighting that same fight; a terrific battle against the disillusionment at the heart of society, and it’s a beautiful thing.

As the 21st century got under way, history remained the outstanding concern of English literature. Although contemporary issues such as global warming and international conflicts (especially the Second Persian Gulf War and its aftermath) received attention, writers were still more disposed to look back. In doing so, it also displayed another preoccupation of the 21st century’s early years: the imitation of earlier literary styles and techniques. There was a marked vogue for pastiche and revisionary Victorian novels (of which Michel Faber’s The Crimson Petal and the White was a prominent example).

The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media is an international group of artists sharing a holistic world view. The thought that unites the society is, "We are all connected. There exists a oneness and unity to everything, everyone, and the whole." This philosophical premise distinguishes it from other art societies that are based on a single medium.

Layered art is distinguished not by its medium, style, or technique so much as by the individual mind of the artist who creates it. Layers are built, metaphysically as well as physically, with an emphasis on metaphoric relationships among all elements in the work. Although layers may be transparent and visible, others might be hidden, known only to their creator. They might contain buried words, objects, prayers, or symbols. Personal memories and the collective unconscious lend forms and significance to each piece of layered art.
