Landscape and Memory book. Landscape and Memory is a long book

Landscape and Memory book. One of Time Magazine's Best Books of the YearIn Landscape and. Landscape and Memory is a long book. It is hard not to be impressed by the shear number of pages Simon Schama can put out. And his subject matter - the cultural perception of landscape and its use in national discourses - is one I enjoy. This is an incredibly broad-brush view of the subject, meandering through Lithuanian forests to Bernini's fountains and the gardens at Versaille, then on to Mount Rushmore, to name a small sampling of the locations he grazes.

In landscape planning the emphasis up till now has been predominantly on the preservation of historic values. A shift in attention to the moulding of new landscapes requires focusing on the analysis of elements and forces that underlie the formation of the existing landscapes and also an understanding of their potential for future development.

Dirk Sijmons (1949), landscape architect, studied at Delft University of Technology. In 2002 Dirk Sijmons received the Rotterdam Maaskant award. On this occasion his book Landkaartmos was published. He worked at the Nature Conservation unit of the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Social work from 1977 until 1981. Other books by Sijmons are ‘ Oorden van Onthouding’ (1998, about nature and design), ‘Landschap’ (1998, which was published in English as ‘Landscape’ in 2002).

Landscape is one of the few Dutch words that has found its way into other languages. The debate on the future of the Dutch man-made landscape, its valuable heritage and the transfomations of the present landscape is the main theme of =Landscape . Even today attractive , living man-made landscapes are still being created. New assignments ranging from the extraction of drinking water to cultivation under glass and from sub-urbanisation to wind turbines are points on the programme for designing the landscape of the twenty-first century. The plans in this book offer a glimpse of this. With this publication, the Dutch office H+N+S landcapes architects wants to emphasise the task of regaining the pleasure of creating our landscape that cultural policy makers have: the Netherlands should once again be regarded as a work of art!
